Can Over-rinsing the Nasal Cavity Cause Harm?

In daily life, the nasal cavity, as our first line of defense for breathing, plays a vital role in filtering, warming, and humidifying the air. To maintain nasal cleanliness and health, many people choose to rinse their nasal cavity with saline solution, a method that can indeed help relieve nasal congestion and reduce nasal inflammation. However, improper rinsing, especially over-rinsing, can cause unexpected damage to our nasal cavity.

 

Damaging the Nasal Mucosal Barrier

The nasal mucosa is a soft and elastic layer of tissue inside the nasal cavity. It acts as a natural barrier, not only preventing harmful substances such as dust and bacteria from entering the body, but also secreting mucus to trap these foreign objects and expelling them from the nasal cavity through the movement of cilia. When we over-rinse our nose, the frequent water flow constantly irritates the nasal mucosa, causing mechanical damage. Over time, the nasal mucosa becomes fragile and sensitive, and its barrier function is significantly compromised. The mucous membranes, which should effectively protect against external aggressors, are now riddled with holes, making them more susceptible to bacterial and viral infections, leading to nasal infections such as rhinitis and sinusitis. Symptoms include nasal congestion, runny nose, and headaches, significantly impacting quality of life.

 

Disruption of the Normal Nasal Flora Balance

The nasal cavity is not a sterile environment but rather contains a variety of microorganisms that interact and maintain a stable micro-ecosystem. These normal flora play a crucial role in maintaining nasal health, inhibiting the growth and reproduction of harmful bacteria and preventing nasal infections. However, excessive nasal irrigation alters this environment, affecting factors such as the composition, temperature, and pH of the rinsing solution, thus disrupting this flora balance. When beneficial bacteria decrease, harmful bacteria proliferate, disrupting the balance and causing nasal flora imbalance. This not only triggers nasal inflammation but can also weaken the nasal cavity's resistance, making it more vulnerable to external pathogens and increasing the risk of illness.

 

Nosebleeds Caused by Excessive Rinsing

The nasal cavity is richly supplied with superficial blood vessels, especially in Kiesselbach's area at the lower anterior part of the nasal septum. This area has a dense network of blood vessels with relatively thin walls, making them susceptible to rupture and bleeding from external factors. Excessive nasal irrigation, due to the strong impact of the water flow, can directly damage these blood vessels, leading to rupture and bleeding. This risk is particularly high for individuals with dry and fragile nasal mucosa, such as the elderly, children, and those with conditions like dry rhinitis or atrophic rhinitis. Nosebleeds not only cause physical discomfort but can also lead to dizziness, weakness, and in severe cases, even death due to excessive blood loss.

 

Nosebleeds Affect the Nasal Cavity's Self-Cleaning Function

The nasal cavity possesses a powerful self-cleaning function. Through the cilia movement of the nasal mucosa, it gradually expels dust, bacteria, and other foreign objects adhering to the nasal cavity. This self-cleaning function is a self-protective mechanism developed through long-term evolution, effectively maintaining nasal cleanliness and health. However, excessive nasal irrigation can interfere with the normal physiological functions of the nasal cavity, especially inhibiting the movement of cilia. When cilia movement is inhibited, their ability to expel foreign objects decreases. Foreign objects cannot be cleared from the nasal cavity in time and will accumulate, further increasing the burden on the nasal cavity and affecting normal breathing and ventilation. Over time, this can lead to decreased nasal function and a series of nasal diseases.

 

While nasal irrigation is an effective method of nasal care, it is crucial to use the correct method and frequency to avoid over-irrigation. When irrigating the nasal cavity, choose a suitable rinsing solution, such as saline solution, and follow the correct operating procedures. Pay attention to the intensity and frequency of irrigation; generally, irrigating 1-2 times a day is recommended. Only in this way can we maintain nasal cleanliness while avoiding the damage caused by excessive nasal irrigation, keeping our nasal cavity in a healthy state.
